We welcome many different beliefs, including yours!

We have more than one way of experiencing the world and understanding the sacred, united by our principles and values. We celebrate the people of many cultures and identities who already find home in Unitarian Universalism (UU), and challenge ourselves to open our doors ever-wider. UU is a supportive and friendly home for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals, families, and communities.

People of many backgrounds follow diverse paths to a UU identity. You can find out more about the paths that our congregation members have taken by clicking here.

How We Got Started

A black and white picture taken in the 1960s show some of the original congregation members standing in a group and smiling

Our community began in 1957, when about ten families in Livermore formed a Unitarian Fellowship. Many of the adults worked at the nearby Lawrence Livermore Laboratories. The group was originally led by lay people, meeting in members’ homes or renting out spaces around town. Eventually, the Fellowship purchased an older house on East First Street and spent a year bringing it up to code, and invited student ministers from Starr King to give the sermons.

60th Anniversary Celebration

In 2017, the Unitarian Universalist Church in Livermore celebrated its 60th anniversary! A committee of volunteers complied information into a booklet about how the congregation was started, including the history of its ministry, religious education, social justice, and music. It includes pictures of the original congregants along with stories from past ministers. Please click here to read it.
