“The Anthropology of Air”

In this sermon, Bill Heavlin incorporates Buddhist wisdom, modern psychology, and engineering science to examine our responses to life’s disappointments. In particular, it draws on the engineering insights of the Wright Brothers and the spiritual wisdom of therapist David Richo. He then describes the deep connections between core coping skills, effective social action, and spiritual seeking.

The framework of this talk uses the so-called 5 givens of Buddhism: (1) Everything changes and ends. (2) Things do not always go according to plan. (3) Life is not always fair. (4) Pain is part of life. (5) People are not always loving and loyal.

There is a companion talk, “The Anthropology of Water,” on sympathetic joy (mudita).
